🏠 HOUSING: MAKING AFFORDABLE HOMES A PRIORITY

Having a safe, stable, and affordable place to live is important for everyone, especially older adults who want to remain independent and in their communities.

As Minnesota prepares for the 2027 legislative session, the Minnesota Housing Partnership (MHP) coalition is working to make housing more affordable and accessible.

Some of the top priorities include:

  • More affordable housing: Making it easier to build new homes and preserve existing affordable housing.

  • Rental assistance: Increasing funding to help families and seniors stay in their homes and avoid homelessness.

  • Housing tax credits: Expanding programs that encourage affordable housing development.

  • Dedicated housing funding: Supporting a proposal to dedicate a portion of Minnesota's sales tax to affordable housing.

  • Manufactured home protections: Strengthening the rights of people living in manufactured home communities.

These efforts are especially important for seniors living on fixed incomes who are struggling with rising housing costs.

FEDERAL HOUSING LAW: WHAT IT MEANS FOR MINNESOTA

The new Federal 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act offers opportunities to increase affordable housing, but many changes could take years to put into place. https://nextcity.org/urbanist-news/washington-may-take-years-to-implement-the-new-housing-law-states-can-act

Minnesota may be able to move forward sooner with some improvements, including making it easier to build manufactured and modular homes and speeding up approvals for affordable housing projects.

Another important goal is protecting nearly 8,000 affordable rural rental homes in Minnesota that are financed through USDA programs.

Manufactured homes are also receiving attention because they offer a more affordable housing option for many older adults.

❤️ CAREGIVING: STANDING UP FOR SENIORS

All Elders is gearing up for the 2027 Legislative Session.

We will be focused on two important issues which remain at the forefront of our advocacy:

1. Affordable Internet Access and Training for Seniors

Today, internet access is more than a convenience. It is an essential service that helps seniors stay connected to family, communicate with healthcare providers, attend medical appointments online, and find important information.

This is especially important for older adults in rural communities and those who have difficulty traveling.

All Elders will continue advocating for affordable, reliable internet service and training to help seniors feel comfortable using technology.

2. Making Medicaid Work Better

All Elders is also continuing efforts to reduce unnecessary administrative costs in Minnesota's Medicaid system.

One concern is the cost of using private managed care organizations to administer Medicaid services. We support educating lawmakers from both parties about ways to reduce these costs and make sure more healthcare dollars go directly toward caring for people.

OUR COMMITTMENT TO OLDER MINNESOTANS

Whether it's finding an affordable place to live, getting the care we need, or staying connected through technology, these issues affect the quality of life of older adults across Minnesota.

All Elders United for Justice will continue speaking up for policies that help seniors live with dignity, independence, and security
